Miami Marlins v New York MetsDominic Smith has had a busy few weeks since the Mets selected him with the 11th overall pick of the 2013 MLB draft. Upon signing his contract with New York to join the organization for an under-slot deal of approximately $2.6 million, the young first baseman reported to Port St. Lucie to begin his professional career in Rookie Ball for the Gulf Coast League Mets.

In his first dosage of GCL action Sunday, Smith responded with his first two hits and an RBI. After playing in his professional debut, he joined the men of The Happy Recap Radio Show to talk about his transition from being a high school senior to being a pro ballplayer. He was on the show for a little over 20 minutes, and touched upon the Mets’ early expectations for him this season, where he’s received the most instruction in the batter’s box, what’s currently on his iPod, and how Tim Byrdak helped him learn the ropes of being in pro ball.

It was great to listen to what Smith had to say, as we’re still trying to get to know the newest first round pick in the Mets organization. My favorite part was that he requested the number 22 because it’s just been his number his whole life, not because of anyone else. Not that he shouldn’t have a player to look up to, but it looks like he’s dedicated to playing his own game.

To listen to the segment where Smith appears on the show, fast forward to the 7:00 minute mark below. You can follow The Happy Recap Radio Show on Blog Talk Radio.
