Las Vegas 51s second baseman Dilson Herrera and Binghamton Mets first baseman Dominic Smith have been selected to represent the Mets in the 2016 Futures Game in San Diego on July 10th.
Smith will be playing on the U.S. roster while Herrera will be playing for Team World.
Herrera, 22, has struggled of late dropping his slash line down to .278/.324/.474 for the season in 291 at bats. He does have 11 home runs already which is just two shy of his career high that he set in 2014.
Smith, 21, has already matched his career in home runs this year with six in 266 at bats in his first taste of Double-A. Overall, he is hitting .259/.317/.383 with 48 RBIs which is fifth in the Eastern League. He is hitting .312/.356/.484 with runners in scoring position.
St. Lucie manager Luis Rojas will be the bench coach for the World team while Columbia Fireflies manager Jose Leger will be the third base coach.
Last year, Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto participated in the Futures Game. Conforto went 2 for 2 and showed off his strong arm throwing out a runner at home while Nimmo was 1 for 2 with a run batted in.
What is the eligibility? Herrera isn’t considered a prospect anymore.
So according to the rules, only 2 players per organization may be selected. Selection is by Baseball America with cooperation of MLB and all teams.
No where does it state that the players must be a prospect.
Any recent scouting report on Herrera? Why is he struggling?
I haven’t seen any new reports, but coming off his recent homerun barrage safe deduction is he is trying to kill everything.
This comment seems to imply that either Smith or Herrera isn´t a prospect…??
Herrera isn’t by MLB definition of a prospect
