The MLB draft is only three days away and a flurry of mock drafts have been coming out. The overall consensus seems to be the Mets will be taking a college bat. The last time the Mets took a college bat in the first round, it was Michael Conforto. The time before that, it was Ike Davis. So it is not as risk averse as you might be led to believe but picking the right one could give the Mets a very earl return on their investment.

Here are the other draft updates we have done: 5/2, 5/11, and 5/17.

Keith Law of ESPN has the Mets taking Jonathan India. India has been a popular pick for a few weeks now. The buzz was the Mets might have a pre-draft deal with India in hopes of getting an over-slot player with their second pick. Like Mark Vientos from a year ago. India as mentioned before is coming off a breakout year and will be able to move through the system quickly. India’s biggest advantage is his ability to stay at third unlike many college third basemen who have to move to first.

In Law’s mock draft, he also had the Giants taking Cole Winn as opposed to Joey Bart. He also had Nick Madrigal falling to the Reds, who pick right before the Mets. The draft could get very interesting if those players fall to the Mets. I am less inclined to believe that Bart will fall to number six but I think Madrigal is possible, not likely, but possible.

Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com has the Mets taking Alec Bohm out of Wichita State. In his mock, Jonathan India was taken by the Reds with the fifth pick. Bohm projects to be a better hitter than India in many regards but the drawback is his defense. He is probably not going to be able to handle the hot corner in the pros. Keith Law wrote in his chat yesterday that the Mets like Bohm but he isn’t their top choice. Bohm has been heavily linked to the Phillies heavily who pick third overall. Count me as one who does not believe that he is going to be a Met on Monday night.

Peter Gammons of the Athletic says one NL scouting director suggested the Mets will take OF Jarred Kelenic. Kelenic is a high schooler out of Wisconsin and will turn 19 in July. In terms of talent, Kelenic has a ton of it. The biggest reason he might fall is because he lives in Wisconsin and was not able to play much this past Spring due to the weather.

Kiley McDaniel of Fangraphs mentioned that the Mets like Kelenic and many mocks say that he will be the pick if the Mets choose to go the high school route. Kelenic is the classic high school prospect who can do it all. He has an advanced approach too which helps and should add more power as he matures. The rumblings are that the Mets want an athlete and Kelenic is certainly that.

Others

It appears as though Travis Swaggerty will be on the board at number six. Swaggerty has a lower ceiling than Kelenic but might be the safer pick. I would also reccomend not holdng your breath on Nick Madrigal and Joey Bart despite their slight drop in the recent mocks.
