New Hampshire 16, Binghamton 5
The New Hampshire Fisher Cats hammered five home runs, including four in an eight-run seventh inning, and handed the Binghamton Mets a 16-5 loss at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on Sunday evening. The Fisher Cats pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of nine walks to hand the B-Mets their most lopsided loss of the season.
B-Mets starter Erik Goeddel opened the game with a pair of scoreless innings, but struggled with his command in the third. The right-hander loaded the bases on three consecutive walks and paid for it. Clint Robinson hammered a 1-1 offering off the video board in right-center to give New Hampshire a four-run lead.
The Fisher Cats continued their offensive attack in the fifth with a four-run inning. Following two more walks, Ryan Schimpf laced an RBI single up the middle to end Goeddel’s night. Ryan Fraser took over and immediately surrendered a two-run double to Brian Van Kirk and an RBI single to Jon Talley.
Binghamton had no solution for Fisher Cats starter Marcus Stroman. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out eight over seven innings. He allowed just four hits and never faced more than four batters in any inning.
The B-Mets only offensive highlights against Stroman came in the form of a pair of home runs. Allan Dykstra launched a solo shot to center in the fourth and Travis Taijeron went deep to right-center in the seventh. It was Dykstra’s 14th round-tripper of the year and Taijeron’s eighth as a B-Met.
Fraser posted a shutout sixth inning before stumbling in the seventh. Andy Burns led off the frame with a solo homer inside the left-field foul pole. Following a hit batter and a walk, Talley crushed a three-run homer to right-center, kicking New Hampshire’s lead to double digits.
Adam Kolarek relieved Fraser after another walk, but could not stop the bleeding. Robinson singled and Brad Glenn banged a 2-2 pitch off the restaurant in left field for a three-run bomb. Burns capped the frame with a solo homer, his second long-ball of the inning.
Trailing 16-2, the B-Mets mustered a small rebuttal against reliever Randy Boone. Danny Muno provided an RBI single in the eighth and the B-Mets plated two runs on four singles in the ninth.
Goeddel (7-3) walked a career-high seven and was tagged for seven runs over 4-2/3 innings in his first loss since April 19. Stroman (5-2) allowed two runs and picked up the victory in his longest career outing.
The B-Mets (53-32) conclude their five-game series against the Fisher Cats on Monday afternoon at 12:05 PM. LHP Darin Gorski makes the start against LHP Sean Nolin.
