Edgardo Alfonzo Will Not Return As Brooklyn Cyclones Manager

After leading the Brooklyn Cyclones to their first ever outright New York-Penn League title and with Mickey Callaway being fired as the Mets managers, there was at least some fan speculation whether it would be Edgardo Alfonzo‘s last season in Brooklyn with him possibly being ready to take over the reigns for the Major League club.

Unfortunately, as reported by Mike Puma of the New York Post, not only will Alfonzo not be a candidate for the Mets managerial position, but he has also been relieved of his duties as the Cyclones manager. The explanation provided to Alfonzo was the new regime “wants to bring in its own people.”

While you can certainly understand the impetus for a new front office to bring in their own people, the decision made certainly seems peculiar with Alfonzo staying on as the manager in the first year of Brodie Van Wagenen’s tenure as General Manager. The timing also seems odd as Alfonzo just led the Cyclones to the championship.

In his three years as the Cyclones manager, he had a 107-119 record. The last two years the Cyclones have been over .500, and as noted, they won the New York-Penn League title this year.

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, the Mets have in store for Alfonzo. He’s been a member of the Mets organization as a player and a part of the minor league coaching staffs for 19 years. As a player, he was a fan favorite who was a member of the 1999 and 2000 Mets postseason teams.

Whoever replaces Alfonzo is likely going to have big shoes to fill. Being a fan favorite, Alfonzo was a draw to the park for fans. Of course, seeing his work as a manager, Alfonzo was more than that as he had success in terms of win-loss record and developing players.
