If the Mets choose to trade Daniel Murphy and bring in a quality shortstop, they may not have to look any further for a quality second baseman. As reported in the NY Daily News, Kristie Ackert writes that Eric Young would have no problem moving over to play second base if he was called upon. Young came up as a second baseman but was coverted into an outfielder with the Rockies.
Young shared:
“Being with the Rockies prepared me to be ready for anything and that is how I go into spring training this season,” Young said. “I will make sure I get my work in the outfield, but I will make sure I work on ground balls and double plays as well.
Putting Young at second base will keep his speed in the lineup and open a door for the Mets to land a power bat for one of the corner outfield positions. In 2013, Young hit .258/.325/.338, with 38 stolen bases in 91 games and he finished with a career high 46 stolen bases and was the National League champion. A good first season with his new club and hoping to make more of an impact in 2014.
With all the questions surrounding the Mets and what will the lineup look like in 2014, one thing is for sure, the Mets have a few pieces to add to the mix that can really make a difference, and the key is bringing in the right guys that will bring this all together. Speed, power, defense and pitching wins games, and so far the Mets have some of each, but more of the same would be the best scenerio. I am glad to see when players will do whatever it takes to be in the lineup, and having a versatile guy on the roster makes decisions a bit easier when writing out the lineup card. These are the guys that every team needs on the roster; true team players that will do what it takes to help the team win.
Come on, really? He’s willing to move to 2B and you champion him as “a true team player.” A guy who is willing to do what it takes, etc.?
That’s a little pie in the sky, don’t you think?
Eric Young is a professional baseball player. Seems like a good guy. Nice speed. He put up a .653 OPS with no power last season. He’s nobody’s idea of a full-time corner outfielder. Of course he’s willing to play anywhere. What other option does he have?
Here’s my favorite observation:

Good to know!
DON’T trade Murphy, period!!!
Dave – that would be my first option, and since the Mets are in disagreement with Tejada, we all know he isn’t an option, and shouldn’t be an option. But if for some crazy reason the Mets trade Murphy, I wouldn’t mind seeing Young at 2B.
I’m all for EY learning a new position and giving us flexibility in the field in the lineup to allow playing time for others but why are so many fans ignoring Flores like he doesn’t exist?
If Murphy is traded, Flores should get the bulk of the playing time at 2B with EY filling in occasionally.
