The MLB Draft is this Thursday, June 9. It feels like not too long ago when we began our coverage projecting back and forth who the Mets should chose. Now, we’ve narrowed it down well enough, but we still aren’t quite sure who the Mets will ultimately chose. The one thing we do know for sure, is that the Mets definitely want to go with a college bat at pick #19. At #31, we aren’t so sure, with that being said, let’s take a look at some college bats the Mets could target in the draft.

#5 CJ Chatham, SS  (By Ernest Dove:)

Ht: 6’4″  Wt: 180 School: Florida Atlantic University  B/T: R/R  Age: 21 Yrs, 5 Mos

Statistics: 57 G, 245 AB, 89 H, 17 2B, 4 3B, 8 HR, 23 BB/35 K, .363/.428/.563

Profile: CJ has been the steady #3 hitter in the FAU Fighting Owls lineup all year, leading the team to its first regular season conference championship in Conference USA.  CJ, picked as the preseason favorite  to win player of the year in the conference, was recently awarded the Conference Player of the Year Award, along with the Defensive Player of the Year Award as well in this his third and most successful season at the college level.  CJ started every game for the Owls this year at the shortstop position.

#4 Matt Thaiss, C

Ht: 5’11”  Wt: 197  School: University of Virginia   B/T: L/R  Age: 5/6/1995 (Age 21)

Statistics: 59 G, 229 AB, 87 H, 13 2B, 10 HR, 37 BB/16 K, .380/.474/.585

Profile: Previously drafted in the 23rd Round by Boston in 2013, Thaiss has really turned it around with the bat. He has an advanced approach at the plate and solid power. He’ll hit a lot for extra-bases, though he should have some over-the-fence pop at the next level. He’s a very consistent hitter, but his catching skills are still a bit raw. He has a fringy arm and rough receiving skills, which should make him a long term first baseman, where he has played a bit in college.

#3 Bryan Reynolds, OF

Ht: 6’2″  Wt: 195  School: Vanderbilt   B/T: S/R  Age: 1/27/1995 (Age 21)

Statistics: 62 G, 224 AB, 74 H, 16 2B, 3 3B, 13 HR, 49 BB/58 K, .330/.461/.603

Profile: Undrafted and relatively unheralded as a Tennessee high-schooler. No standout tools, but has a ton of offensive potential and solid speed. He is also a great defender. and defensive skills make him one of the more well-rounded college position players in the 2016 draft class. He has a smooth swing and feel from both sides, though there have been some concerns about swing-and-miss issues.

#2 Zack Collins, C

Ht: 6’2″  Wt: 210  School: University of Miami  B/T: L/R  Age: 2/6/1995 (Age 21)

Statistics: 56 G, 173 AB, 61 H, 8 2B, 12 HR, 67 BB/48 K, .353/.528/.607

Profile: Drafted back in 2013 as a Top 100 draft prospect coming out of high school. He fell to the 27th round due to signability issues. There are a lot of concerns whether he’ll stick at catcher, but since High School, he throws better than he did, though he still has a fringy average arm and he doesn’t move that well behind the plate. The bat is 100% there, and could be the next Kyle Schwarber because he has so much potential, just no position. He would be a nice fit for an AL team in need of a DH.

#1 Will Craig, 3B/RHP

Ht: 6’3″  Wt: 235  School: Wake Forest  B/T: L/R  Age: 11/16/1994 (Age 21)

Statistics: 53 G, 174 AB, 67 H, 16 2B, 16 HR, 47 BB/33 K, .385/.532/.753

Profile: Previously drafted by the Royals in the 37th Round in 2013. He is a big kid with impressive power. His ability to backspin balls helps give him 20-homer potential in the big leagues. He also has a real feel for hitting for extra bases, as his slugging percentage was one of the best in college baseball this year. His mastery of the strike zone should enable him to post high on-base percentages as well.
