New Britain 5, Binghamton 3

-The New Britain Rock Cats scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning as they defeated the Binghamton Mets, 5-3 Sunday night at NYSEG Stadium. Despite the loss, their magic number to clinch the Eastern Division dropped to 3 with Trenton’s loss.

After a scoreless first inning, the B-Mets got on the board in the bottom of the second inning against D.J. Baxendale. With one out, Travis Taijeron blasted a solo home run over the left field wall to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead. It was Taijeron’s 12th home run as a B-Met, and his 21st home run in 2013 between two levels.

On the mound Erik Goeddel was locked in through four innings. He had walked two, but did not allow a base hit as he faced the minimum number of hitters. Things went South for Goeddel however in New Britain’s five-run fifth.

Miguel Sano began the inning with a sharp single, and Nate Hanson followed with a two-run home run to give the Rock Cats their first lead of the night. After a single by Eddie Rosario, Reynaldo Rodriguez hit another two-run shot. His round-tripper was a long fly ball that landed in the rail yard beyond the left field wall. Later in the inning Evan Bigley capped the scoring with an RBI infield single.

In the bottom of the sixth, Binghamton attempted a comeback against Baxendale. Danny Muno hit a leadoff single, and Josh Rodriguez scored him from first base with an RBI double down the left field line. Two batters later Allan Dykstra poked a RBI single to right field. The hit scored Rodriguez, and made it a 5-3 game. Binghamton was able to put the tying run on base, but they could not push them across.

Goeddel’s night ended after six innings. He allowed five runs and six hits, and was tagged with his sixth loss of the season. Armando Rodriguez was the first reliever out of the bullpen, and only allowed one hit in two scoreless frames. Hamilton Bennett also threw a scoreless inning in the ninth.

Binghamton’s final comeback effort came in the ninth inning against New Britain closer, Dakota Watts. Xorge Carrillo hit a one-out double, and two batters later Danny Muno walked to put the tying run on base. Watts got out of trouble however, as Rodriguez flied out and ended the game. Baxendale (5-6) earned the win, and Watts earned his sixth save.

Binghamton (79-48) continues their six-game homestand by welcoming the Bowie Baysox to NYSEG Stadium on Monday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 PM as the B-Mets send LHP Darin Gorski to the mound against Devin Jones.
