Greenville 6, Savannah 4

The host Greenville Drive rallied with a five-run fourth inning to take the lead, then held off the Savannah Sand Gnats for a 6-4 victory Sunday at Fluor Field at the West End.

Savannah (50-36 overall, 7-10 second half in Class A South Atlantic League) had leads of 3-0, 3-1 and 4-1 before Greenville (32-55, 10-8) took a 6-4 lead in the fourth. Drew Turocy and David Chester opened with doubles for one run, and Chester scored on Aneury Tavarez’s one-out single. Tavarez stole second base and took third on a groundout.

After Jake Kuebler (2-5) walked Jordan Weems, his wild pitch allowed Tavarez to score and Weems to take second. Keaton Briscoe followed with an RBI double and scored when Mookie Betts reached base on Savannah third baseman Jeff Reynolds’ throwing error.

The Sand Gnats led 3-0 in the first on Brandon Nimmo’s one-out double, Kyle Johnson reaching on a fielding error, Maikis De La Cruz’s two-run triple and Stefan Sabol’s RBI double.

Johnson had reached third base in the third inning on a leadoff double and a wild pitch, but Greenville starter Francellis Montas struck out the next three batters swinging.

Savannah did add a run in the fourth on Johnson’s bases-loaded walk. The Gnats challenged in the ninth on Phillip Evans’ leadoff double and Chad Zurcher’s walk to put the tying runs on base, but a double-play groundout and a flyout ended the game.

Jack McGeary (1-0) earned his first win with three shutout, hitless innings of relief, and Yunior Ortega got his first save with two scoreless innings.
