Binghamton 3, Bowie 2

After playing both catcher and right field, Blake Forsythe blasted a leadoff, walk-off home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to push the Binghamton Mets past the Bowie Baysox, 3-2 on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium. The victory was Binghamton’s fifth walk-off win, and it dropped the magic number to win the Eastern Division to 2.

The first five innings went scoreless for both teams, but they did not go without some trouble for Binghamton. Wilfredo Tovar was removed from the game after sliding into second base in the third inning, forcing Alonzo Harris to play second base for the first time in over a year. One inning later, Cory Vaughn left the game after being hit in the back of the helmet by a pitch from Devin Jones. After Vaughn’s exit, Forsythe went from behind the plate and into right field. By the fifth inning, only two of Binghamton’s eight starting position players were in their original spots.

Binghamton started the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning against Jones. Danny Muno singled with one out, and was able to move up to third base one batter later. Josh Rodriguez hit a bouncer to Niuman Romero at shortstop, but his throw skipped into centerfield to put runners at the corners. Xorge Carrillo came through with a sacrifice fly to deep center to put Binghamton on the board.

Bowie responded immediately in the top of the seventh against Darin Gorski. Josh Horton led off with a double, moved to third base on a bunt, and scored on a sac fly from Luis Martinez. Gorski’s night ended after seven innings of one-run baseball. He was able to leave the game in line for the win however, as the B-Mets re-took the lead in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and nobody on base, Richard Lucas hit a solo shot over the wall for a 2-1 lead. Jones also left the game after seven innings on the mound, and allowed two runs on four hits.

Adam Kolarek held the lead with a scoreless eighth inning before handing the ball to closer Jeff Walters in the ninth. Walters was not able to convert on the save chance however; the righty allowed two hits and eventually walked Buck Britton with the bases loaded to bring in the tying run. With the bases still loaded, he retired Lew Ford to push the game into extra innings.

Chasen Bradford worked around two base hits in the top of the 10th to keep the game tied, and Forsythe led off the bottom with a solo shot against Marcel Prado to end the game. The bomb gave Binghamton their second walk-off homer of the season; Joe Bonfe also beat the Baysox with a blast on June 16.

The B-Mets (80-48) continue their three-game series against the Baysox (64-63) on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton sends RHP Greg Peavey to the mound to face LHP Eduardo Rodriguez.
