Well, this should really come as no surprise. Gabriel Ynoa will be taking the mound tonight in search of his 15th win this season, but he will be pitching with an extra distinction from the South Atlantic League.

Congratulations to Ynoa on this awesome accomplishment!! Like I said, this is not surprising, as he’s been dominant all year long. In 21 starts and 129.2 innings pitched, the 20-year-old is 14-4 with a 2.71 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and has allowed 117 hits and only 14 walks, while striking out 105 opposing hitters.

Here’s how some of those statistics stack up against the rest of his fellow SAL pitchers:

  • Wins: 14 (1st)
  • ERA: 2.71 (3rd)
  • IP: 129.2 (12th)
  • Ks: 105 (T-18th)

He’s been a model of consistency throughout the entire season, and this honor is well deserved for the right-hander. His 1.0 BB/9 rate this season is exactly what he’s done over the course of his career since joining the organization in 2010, but the increase in strikeouts he started seeing in Brooklyn last season has continued in Savannah. His K/9 was 7.5 with the Cyclones, and it was about the same in 2013, coming in at 7.3. His career ratio is 6.2 strikeouts per every nine innings, so we’re all enjoying this upward trend.

A lot can also be said about Frank Viola, Savannah’s pitching coach. The pitchers that go through Low-A do nothing but rave about him, and he’s been preparing the young hurlers quite well for the next levels that are ahead of him. Viola has also been named a coach on the SAL All-Star team.

Congratulations to both of these guys for a stellar season in Savannah. Now let’s get ready for some playoff baseball at Grayson Stadium!
