Brooklyn 2, State College 1

John Gantdid not allow a hit through 5.1 innings as he dominated State College’s lineup on Saturday night, in a 2-1 win over the Spikes. Gant’s no-hit bid and shutout was broken up in the sixth inning.Gant tossed 6.0 innings, allowed just one run on two hits, and struck out seven.Gant has not had a start this season in which he has pitched less than 5.0 innings.

Gant received just enough offense to record his third consecutive win, and fourth of the season. The Cyclones got on the board right away, with leadoff batter Patrick Biondistarting the inning off with a hustle double. What looked like a routine single to center field, Biondi took advantage of the center fielders slow approach to the ball, taking second. Gavin Cecchini then moved Biondi to third on a line drive single to left field. The hit extended Cecchini’s hit streak to 10 games, the Cyclones longest of the season. L.J. Mazzilli then hit a sacrifice fly to right field that was just deep enough to score Biondi, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.

The Cyclones added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, giving Brooklyn a 2-0 lead. Ismael Tijerina reached base on a hit by pitch, which was followed by anAnthony Chavez walk, putting runners at first and second. Cecchini added his second hit of the night on an RBI single to right field that scored Tijerina. Over his 10 game hitting streak, Cecchini is batting .381 (16-42).

Leading 2-1 with the tying run on second base in the bottom of the sixth and two outs,Gant struck out Mason Katz to get out of the inning. Katz was the last batter Gantfaced, before being relieved by John Mincone. Mincone tossed two scoreless innings to keep the Cyclones in front. Johnny Magliozzi came in to pitch a scoreless ninth, recording his fourth save of the season. Brooklyn pitching limited State College to just two hits.

The Cyclones take the field again today at MCU Park against the State College at 5:00 PM.
