With today being the last day of the minor league season, the New York Mets have announced their next group of September call-ups. The players include Brandon Nimmo, T.J. Rivera, Eric Campbell, Josh Edgin, Erik Goeddel, Rafael Montero, and Gavin Cecchini.

Matt Reynolds will be recalled and with the team on Monday as the others will join the Mets on Tuesday.

Cecchini is the biggest surprise as he is not on the 40 man roster. However, the Mets have some options to add him including moving Jon Niese or Neil Walker to the 60 day disabled list.

The 2012 first round draft pick is having a terrific year in AAA hitting .324/.387/.448 with 27 doubles, two triples, eight homers, and 54 RBI.

Cecchini’s defensive struggles at shortstop are well documented. With that in mind, coupled with the emergence of Amed Rosario as the shortstop of the future and the Mets trading away Dilson Herrera for Jay Bruce, Cecchini has been transitioning to second base during the season. In fact, in three of his last four games, he has played second base.

It’ll be interesting to see with Walker’s season ending injury and Loney’s offensive struggles if the Mets will add Cecchini to the second base mix.

As for the other call-ups, Montero is expected to be tomorrow’s starting pitcher with Jacob deGrom needing to miss multiple starts.

Nimmo, Rivera, and Campbell will join Ty Kelly as bench depth while Edgin provides an additional bullpen arm.
