MLB Pipeline is an official prospect ranking system that evaluates the best prospects in the game all year round. They also look at international prospects and draft prospects before they turn pro as well.

As a segment of their program, they compile a list of the Top 100 Prospects in baseball. This year that list will be released live on MLB Network this Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 8:00 p.m. ET. Leading up to the release they amass lists of the Top 10 players at each position. Tuesday night they released the list of Top 10 shortstop prospects in baseball, that list included a Mets top prospect, Andres Gimenez.

Shortstop is one of the most stacked positions among prospects including Fernando Tatis Jr., Royce LewisBrendan Rodgers, and Bo Bichette. Andres Gimenez came in at seventh but don’t look at that as a bad thing. He still is one of the best prospects in all of baseball. He has the best arm of this group, a 60 grade according to MLB Pipeline.  Fellow Mets prospect Peter Alonso has also ranked on a Top 10 List a few days ago.  Alonso was ranked the best first base prospect in baseball mainly for his hit and power tools.

The 20-year-old’s calling card is his defense and his speed which is the reason for his high level of success at such a young age. He has one of the best arms in all of Minor League Baseball-leading to him cracking the MLB Pipeline All-Defensive team at Shortstop.

In 2018, he hit .281/.347/.409 across two levels, High-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton. He hit six home runs, five triples, 29 doubles, 46 RBI’s, stole 38 bases, and walked 31 times compared to 92 strikeouts through 122 games. To refine his craft, the Mets sent Andres over to the Arizona Fall League and he carried his high-caliber capabilities to the Scottsdale Scorpions. Gimenez, through 48 at-bats, hit .125/.250/.292 with a home run, triple, three doubles,  seven RBI, no stolen bases, and eight walks compared to 15 strikeouts. Andres displayed better patience than in season which is a great sign.

This offseason, Gimenez set out to Port St. Lucie early to attend the Barwis Methods clinic in an effort to gain more strength in hopes of that producing more power. Giménez also received his first ever invite to Major League spring training after his hard efforts on becoming the best player he can be.

Gimenez received a non-roster invite to Spring Training with the Mets this year.
