Brooklyn 2, Vermont 0

Robert Gsellman struck out a career-high 13 batters over 8.0 shutout innings as Brooklyn defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 2-0 on Saturday night. Gsellman’s 13 strikeouts are tied for the third most in franchise history and are the most by a Brooklyn hurler since Brad Holt tied the franchise mark with 14 punchouts on July 24, 2008 also against Vermont.

After pounding out a season-high 10 runs on Friday night, the Brooklyn bats picked up right where they left off on Saturday night. In the top of the first, Gavin Cecchinisingled to left to start the threat and L.J. Mazzilli brought him home with his second round tripper of the season to give the Cyclones a 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the frame, Boog Powell led off the inning with a bunt single, but that would be the only base runner Gsellman would allow until the fifth inning, as the righthander retired the next 12 batters he faced. The 20-year-old did not allow a runner to reach second base all game, and allowed only three base runners all game.

RHP Johnny Magliozzi pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game and collect his seventh save of the season for the Cyclones.

With the win, the Cyclones moved to 33-31 and are just 1/2 a game behind the Aberdeen IronBirds in the race for the McNamara Division title with just 11 games remaining.

The Cyclones will look to complete the sweep on Sunday afternoon when they sendRHP Akeel Morris (4-0, 0.47 ERA) to the mound.
