The middle infield continues to be the conduit of great baseball play in Binghamton.  First it was the duo of Wilfredo Tovar and Matt Reynolds that anchored the B-Mets offensive and defensie efforts in the spring of 2014.  When Tovar went down with a thumb injury and Reynolds was elevated to Las Vegas, the calvary was summoned, and Dilson Herrera and T.J. Rivera arrived as first line reinforcements.  To the relief of Binghamton Mets fans, the B-Mets haven’t lost a beat.

Herrera smashed a two-run game-winning blast on Sunday, lifting Binghamton past Erie 5-4.  The clutch home run was the new Binghamton second baseman’s third in 91 at-bats since arriving in Double-A.  Herrera is batting .330 with an on-base-percentage just under .400, and holds the highest OPS (.893) on the team.

Although he went hitless in four at-bats on Sunday, Rivera has also been impressive batting .308 with a .373 OBP.

Herrera’s game-winner erased a rare shoddy defensive effort by the Mets that almost cost them the game.  Five errors in total were committed in the game.

Marcus Lemon put Erie on top in the first inning, taking Hansel Robles deep for a solo home run.

Kyle Johnson‘s ground rule double to started the B-Mets rally in the third inning.  Brandon Nimmo beat out an infield hit which sent Johnson to third.  He would later score on Herrera’s infield force out.  Herrera who was safe at first, would advance to third on a throwing error by Dean Green, and would score the Mets second run on a Dustin Lawley single.

Lemon used his power game to help Erie knot the score in the home third, blasting a one-run double and then scoring on a Devon Travis single.

The Sea Wolves retook the lead in the fourth.  With one out, Corey Jones reached first when Mets catcher Xorge Carrillo failed to play a pop-up in front of home plate.  Jones raced to third on a Dean Jones single and scored when Francisco Martinez singled.

Both teams scored single runs in the sixth inning.  Lawley opened the Binghamton half of the frame, legging out a short tap in front of the plate, then advanced to second when Erie catcher Craig Albernaz overthrew first base.  Lawley moved to third on Rivera’s ground out and scored when Jayce Boyd‘s infield grounder resulted in a fielder’s choice.

Lawley gave the run back, committing two errors in the bottom half of the inning, but set up Herrera’s game-winning heroics in Binghamton’s next at-bat.

Randy Fontanez threw two innings of scoreless relief to pick up his fourth hold.  Cody Satterwhite closed the game in the ninth earning his seventh save.  In 42.1 innings of relief, Satterwhite has a 3-1 record with a 1.49 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP.  Satterwhite has struck out 46 opposing hitters while walking only 17.
