Any news from a game note that has Ike Davis in the home run column in 2014, will be good news.  After struggling mightily through the 2013 season and having to endure rumors of being traded by the Mets, it has to be bitter sweet for Davis to record his first home run this year. It wasn’t just a home run, it was a majestic blast way over the right field wall in today’s Mets Spring opening day.

When I visited spring training camp a few weeks ago I watched Davis during batting practice and noticed how comfortable he looked and how the ball jumped off his bat.  It was easy to be excited about what I witnessed, and I couldn’t wait until the games began to see how he reacted during live game situations.

So for him to put the ball over the wall in today’s game, is good news not only for the team, but for his own psyche and if the lefty can put together a season like he did in 2012 when he hit 32 home runs with 90 RBI’s, especially with the  added protection of having Curtis Granderson in the lineup, 2014 can be a special year for Davis and the Mets.

And yes it is only one game, but I wouldn’t be a true fan if I didn’t get excited about any good that happens. There needs to be something to build on and having a Davis homer in the first game is something to build on.
