Infielder Sam Haggerty has been designated for assignment my the Mets in order to make space on the 40-man roster for Dellin Betances.

Haggerty, 25, received a September call-up last season after slashing .271/.376/.387 with 23 stolen bases across three minor league levels.

He only received four plate appearances in the major leagues and although he scored two runs, he didn’t register a hit. Along with right-handed pitcher Walker Lockett, Haggerty was the Mets’ return in exchange for Kevin Plawecki last winter.

During Haggerty’s tenure in the Major League, he ran at 29.5 ft/sec, well above the MLB average of 27 ft/sec. A rival evaluator named him the best baserunner in the Mets system.

Haggerty now has a week to learn if a team will claim him on waivers. If no team chooses to do so, he’ll be sent back into the Mets farm system.
