It doesn’t seem to matter which team he’s assigned to this season. Wherever first baseman Jayce Boyd is, he just hits the cover off the ball. He was a crucial piece at first base for the Savannah Sand Gnats, as they were crowned first half champions before the SAL All-Star game. Boyd was accompanied at the All-Star game by fellow teammates Bret Mitchell, Beck Wheeler, Kevin Plawecki, and Brandon Nimmo.

Nimmo was the only position player who wouldn’t get the news of being promoted to Single-A St. Lucie, but time will tell how much longer he will remain in Low-A. Adam Rubin put the spotlight on Boyd in this week’s ESPN New York Farm Report, and rightfully so.

Boyd departed the Sally League as the leader in batting average, posting a .361 mark. That included five homers, 46 RBIs, a .441 on-base percentage and three more walks (35) than strikeouts (32) in 249 at-bats.

He’s been with St. Lucie for six games, and he’s picked up where he left off in Savannah. He’s hit in all six games, including five straight multi-hit games before collecting just one yesterday against Bradenton. After 26 at-bats, Boyd is hitting .462/.462/.654 with one homer, seven RBIs, and four runs scored. He’s also recorded at least one RBI in each of his first six Florida State League games.

This is not the first time we’ve taken notice of Boyd’s 2013 season here at MMN, as he’s gotten our attention for a while now. What has been surprising is the breakout season he’s enjoying this year after posting a normal .239/.320/.368 line with Brooklyn following getting taken in the sixth round of last year’s draft.

Boyd shared with Rubin that having the off-season to prepare for a long year that is professional baseball has helped him a lot, and attributes that to his success so far in 2013:

I think it was more so just having that offseason to prepare and get stronger — to be a little more physically ready to go into a full season than coming out of college after playing 75ish games and then going in and playing another 60.

His time with St. Lucie couldn’t have gotten off to a better start, and everyone here at MMN are excited to see how he continues to adjust to life in Port St. Lucie.
