Terry Collins told reporters on Monday that if pitching prospect Jenrry Mejia doesn’t win the fifth spot in the Mets rotation, he will be considered for the Opening Day bullpen.
Mejia will be competing with the likes of John Lannan and Daisuke Matsuzaka for the final rotation spot. Recent reports have indicated that the Mets would like a veteran to round out the rotation.
Mejia, 24, has a career 4.53 ERA in 11 major-league starts. In 32 games as a reliever however, his ERA drops to 3.23.
Terry Collins says Mejia is a candidate for the Opening Day bullpen if he does not make the rotation. #Mets
