Betsy Helfand of the Las Vegas Review-Journal spoke with Las Vegas 51s Pitching Coach Frank Viola regarding the status of a number of pitchers inthe Mets farm system:

  • Tyler Pill (bone chips and spurs in elbow) and Josh Edgin (torn meniscus) have been sent to New York to meet with doctors to discuss the next course of action in their treatment.  There was no mention of a proposed care plan for Pill, but arthroscopic surgery remains a possibility for Edgin.
  • Ricky Knapp will continue to pitch for the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies for the forseeable future to assist that team in the pennant race and possibly the postseason.  He threw a complete game in his first start back in Binghamton allowing just one run.
  • With Knapp’s absence, Luis Mateo will make an additional start for the 51s.  Given his being on a 60 pitch limit, Viola anticipates every fifth day to be a bullpen day, which in his assessment can be quite “burdensome.”
  • One that could help the 51s bullpen is Kelly Secrest getting called-up from Binghamton to Las Vegas.
  • Newly acquired Jacob Rhame will be assigned to the 51s.  Rhame was previously pitching from the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate in the Pacific Coast League.
