Looking At Mets Group Of 2016 Non-Roster Spring Invites

The long waited arrival of the day is finally here, Mets pitchers and catchers report to Port St. Lucie as the first official sign that baseball is back. The first workout will be on Friday for the pitchers and catchers while position players are set to report on the 24th with their first workout on the 26th. Anyone on the Mets 40-man roster receives an automatic invite to big league camp and is not included in this list.

Let’s take a look at his years non-roster invites for big league camp with the Mets:

New Mets on minor league deals

  • Stolmy Pimentel (RHP)- Pitched 11.1 innings out of the Texas Rangers bullpen last year with a 3.97 ERA and 1.235 WHIP. The 25-year old also pitched in 17 games (12 starts) for AAA Round Rock in 2015 going 5-3 with a 5.40 ERA. Originally signed by the Red Sox out of the Dominican Republic, was their #9 in 2010 according to Baseball America
  • Nevin Ashley (C) – Played most of the 2015 season in AAA Colorado Springs Sky Sox (PCL) for the Milwaukee Brewers hitting .306/.374/.442 with eight homeruns, four triples, and knocked in 61 runs. The 31-year old also made his Major League debut in 2015 going 2 for 20 with the Brewers in 12 games. Baseball America called him the best defensive catcher in the Tampa Bay Rays farm system in 2009 and 2010.
  • Ty Kelly (UT) – Hit .226/.322/.296 in 371 at bats while walking 52 times compared to 53 strikeouts last season in Triple-A combined for Blue Jays and Cardinals. He played 15 games at second base, 29 at third, 14 in center field, 39 in left field and 22 in right field. Has more walks (486) than strikeouts (484) in his career and has been a midseason all star four times.
  • Jim Henderson (RHP) – The 33-year old had 111 career relief appearances with the Milwaukee Brewers between 2012 and 2014 with a 3.44 ERA and 1.125 WHIP. Recorded 28 saves and a 2.70 ERA in his first season in the big leagues in 2013.
  • Raywilly Gomez (C) –  The switch hitter played the entire 2015 season at AA for the Angels hitting .291/.385/.336 with eight doubles, a homerun, and 38 walks compared to 28 strikeouts in 244 at bats. The 26-year old also has experience at third base, second base, first base, and shortstop but played only catcher in 2015.
  • Roger Bernadina (OF) – The 31-year old had a strong 2105 season in AAA with the Albuquerque Isotopes hitting .276/.383/.466 with 15 homeruns, 66 RBI, and stole 20 bases. He is a career .236/.307/.354 hitter in the big leagues over 1323 at bats between the Nats, Phillies, Reds, and Dodgers.
  • Marc Krauss (1B/OF) – Got 78 Major League at-bats with three teams in 2015, has 12 big league homeruns over 398 at bats but with just a .188 batting average. The left-handed hitter is a former 2nd round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2008. Hit .275/.403/.414 between two different Triple-A teams during the 2015 season.

Top 30 Prospects 

  • Dominic Smith (1B) – The 20-year old lefty hitter is coming off a breakout season with the St. Lucie Mets winning the Florida State League MVP. He hit .305/.354/.417 with a league leading 33 doubles and 79 RBI.
  • Gavin Cecchini (SS) – Had a superb offensive season with the Binghamton Mets, was an All Star and Eastern League Rookie of the Year. He hit .317/.377/.442 with 26 doubles, four triples, seven homeruns, and knocked in 51.
  • Paul Sewald (RHP) – The right-hander continues to impress despite not having a big fastball, saved 24 games for the Binghamton Mets with a 1.75 ERA and 0.857 WHIP. Allowed only 34 hits in 51.1 innings while striking out 56 in that span.

Minor League Depth

  • Chasen Bradford (RHP) – Pitched in 53 games for the Las Vegas 51’s last year, sporting a 4.11 ERA, 1.571 WHIP, and picked up seven saves.
  • Travis Taijeron (OF) – Powerful outfielder led Mets minors with 25 homeruns but also struck out 147 times in 127 games for Las Vegas.
  • T.J. Rivera (INF) – Continued his career trend of hitting the ball well with a .325/.364/.449 slash line between Binghamton and Las Vegas. Has played all four infield positions with second base being his best defensive spot.
  • Zack Thornton (RHP) – Ground ball pitcher that limited Pacific Coast League hitters to 59 hits in 61.2 innings last season for Las Vegas. Went 4-4 with a 3.94 ERA and 1.346 WHIP.
  • Duane Below (LHP) – Veteran with 78 big league innings under his belt pitched well for Vegas in 2015 with a 2.19 ERA and 1.095 WHIP in 11 games (5 starts).

2015 Mets not on 40-man

  • Daniel Muno (INF) – Struggled with Mets, hitting .148/.258/.185 in his first 32 major league plate appearances.
  • Johnny Monell (C/1B) – Third on the Mets catching depth chart hit just .167/.231/.208 in 48 at bats with the Mets in 2015. Had a good season in Triple-A sporting a .858 OPS for Vegas and had a good winter league season as well in Puerto Rico.
  • Buddy Carlyle (RHP) – Missed most of the season with a back injury, allowed five runs in eight big league innings. Had a very good 2014 with Mets in 31 innings, pitched to a 1.45 ERA and 0.903 WHIP.

Another name to note is minor league catcher Xorge Carrillo who was initially reported to have received an invite to big league camp but was note on the roster released by Adam Rubin yesterday.

Two names to certainly keep an eye on are Henderson and Bernadina who both have a chance to make the team if Jim is healthy and Alejandro De Aza gets moved.
