Today the Florida State League announced that St. Lucie Mets infielder Luis Carpio was selected as the League’s Player of the Week.

For the week of July 9-15, Carpio slashed .481/.481/.667. During the 7-game span he went 13-for-27 with two doubles, one home run, three RBI, three runs scored and one stolen base.

After starting the year off slow, the 21-year-old Carpio has caught fire in the month of July slashing .354/.380/.521 overall.

There have been concerns for Luis Carpio ever since his 2016 shoulder surgery and its effects long-term on the once highly regarded prospect. Coming into the 2018 season with four total home runs as a pro, Luis has seven home runs this year alone for the St. Lucie Mets.

Defensively, Carpio has played mostly second base this season but has also moved over to shortstop at times to either expose Mets top prospect Andres Gimenez to second base or spell Gimenez for a day. The eyeball test shows that Carpio has showed signs of life in his arm strength and the glove to handle either middle infield position going forward.

Carpio was originally signed by the Mets as an international free agent in 2013.

Carpio is the second player on the St. Lucie Mets to receive a weekly Florida State League award this season. Josh Prevost was given the award on June 11.
