Tejada did start game at short, but Guillorme took advantage of his first professional at-bat, collecting a single and coming around to score a run.

Luis Guillorme, a 10th-round selection by the Mets in this year’s MLB draft, has officially been assigned to the GCL Mets roster, effective for today’s ballgame. He’s known for his terrific defense as a shortstop. News of him agreeing to a deal with the organization first broke on June 10th. The Mets agreed to pay him $200,000, which is an over slot deal for a player taken at that point in the draft ($136,400).

On the day his signing was announced, Jim Callis tweeted the details of the deal, while also mentioning one scout compared his glove work to that of legendary shortstop, Omar Vizquel.

The details as to why it took so long for him to get assigned to a minor league team are unclear, but Guillorme did say on twitter that it was due to contract issues. We’ll see if the Mets can develop him into a halfway decent hitter, which seems to be the biggest knock on the shortstop as he begins his professional career.

He won’t be starting today’s game though, as Ruben Tejada was also added to the GCL roster to begin rehabbing a strained quad muscle earlier this month.
