Despite the loss of a minor league season, Mets prospect Matthew Allan continued to show promise on the mound for New York at the Mets’ alternate training site in Brooklyn.

A right-hander, Allan’s fastball-curveball combo is looking as good as ever and has a much-improved changeup, a pitch Allan has rarely had to throw before, according to MLB.com.

“It’s really developed a lot,” Mets executive director of player development Jared Banner told MLB.com. “He’s obviously still throwing the ball very hard, with a lot of life through the zone, but the changeup has really emerged. He has a chance for three plus pitches.”

Allan has also been praised by club officials for his ability to throw against Triple-A and Major League class hitters. He was flashing that ability recently in Mets instructional camp, including blowing a fastball by Mets’ 2020 first round Pete Crow-Armstrong in the video below.

This is all after Allan had a successful minor league debut in 2019 with the Mets’ Gulf Coast League squad as he garnered a 1.08 ERA with 11 strikeouts and only allowing five hits through five games of pitching. The 19-year-old also pitched a game with Short Season affiliate Brooklyn Cyclones last season with three strikeouts and five allowed hits.

The third-round pick in the 2019 draft was highly regarded as a first-round talent as the Mets signed him to a $2.5 million deal, drawing back his collegiate commitment to the University of Florida.
