Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reported earlier today Mets outfield prospect, Matt den Dekker, is ready to return to game action.
Den Dekker was being considered for one of the big league outfield roster spots in spring training, but fractured his wrist during a Grapefruit League game on March 24th. The injury didn’t require surgery, but the outfielder recently got his cast off and was cleared to begin baseball activity.
He was supposed to get into an extended spring training game as a designated hitter today, but Mother Nature had other plans in Port St. Lucie, suspending any baseball activity for the day thanks to rain.
Den Dekker split time between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Buffalo in 2012. He posted a combined split of .274/.321/.458 with 17 home runs, 76 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases in 533 at-bats. After tearing the cover off the ball in Binghamton (.340 BA), he struggled in Buffalo, hitting just .220 with 90 strikeouts in 295 at-bats.
They dont need to put him on the 40 man roster until the Rule 5 draft, but is it possible that we see dan Dekker this year when they don’t even bring back Captain Kirk and Cowgill off strong minor league performances? I don’t see why Ankiel is still on this team rather than developing young players like dan Dekker and Captain Kirk.
