Steven Matz is following a time honored tradition in establishing himself as a New York Met pitching ace.  Historically, the best of the best quality pitchers the parent Mets send to the mound are many times riddled with meager run support.  Most recently, that was the fate of Matt Harvey and before him Johann Santana.

Matz, a flame throwing left-handed pitcher for Binghamton, turned in a sterling pitching performance Sunday in Reading, but his teammates offered the B-Met ace no support as Reading eked out a 1-0 win.

Matz (5-4) pitched seven innings of six hit ball, allowing one run while walking two and striking out four.  The strong outing lowered the young Met’s ERA to a sparkling 2.35 for Binghamton.

Reading managed the games only run in the home fourth.  Albert Cartwright led off with a double to deep centerfield.  It appeared Matz might get out of the jam when he got Carlos Alonso to ground out to third baseman T.J. Rivera and struck out Kelly Dugan, but Jake Fox’s two-out single to right field plated Cartwright with the games only run.

Hoby Miller confounded B-Met hitters all afternoon throwing a complete game three hit shutout.  Not a single Binghamton batter reached first base until Rivera’s one out single in the visitor’s fifth.

Juan Centeno hit a one out single in the B-Met eighth but was erased when Wilfredo Tovar grounded into a double play.   Kyle Johnson led off the Binghamton ninth with a double to left field but that’s as far as Johnson would get with the B-Mets falling, 1-0.

In losing Binghamton lost ground on first place Portland who beat Richmond 7-1.  The B-Mets now trail the Sea Dogs by 1.5 games.
