Matz Tosses Eight Impressive Innings, But Sand Gnats Still Lose 6-2

Game three of the four game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Rome Braves was played in front of 2,309 fans Saturday at Grayson Stadium. It was a solid outing for Rome starter, Lucas Sims, who allowed only one hit in his six innings pitched and he gave up two runs.

Savannah scored both runs in the first inning. Chad Zurcher walked and went to third on a single by Brandon Nimmo. A throwing error by the shortstop allowed Zurcher to score. Cole Frenzel hit a sac fly to right field to score Nimmo. The only other hit in the game by Savannah was a single by Frenzel in the ninth inning.

Rome scored a run in the second inning. In the sixth inning, Ronald Luna doubled and scored on a double by Kyle Wren. A sac fly to center scored Wren. Rome scored three runs in the ninth inning.

Starting Savannah pitcher, Steven Matz, pitched 8.0 innings, allowed three runs, two of them earned, on four hits, and struck out five. Wanel Mesa pitched the ninth inning for Savannah and gave up three runs, walked three, allowed two hits, and struck out one.

The final game of  the four game series starts at 2:05 pm Sunday at Grayson Stadium.
