Mauricio Can Fly

One of the reasons the Mets gave Ronny Mauricio a then record $2.1 million signing bonus last year was his being an exceptionally gifted young man.  One of those tools is his speed, which Fangraphs rates as a 45/50 on the 20-80 scouting scale.  If you want an understanding of what that type of speed looks like, Maurcio put it on display yesterday:

No matter what the level, it is rare we see a no-doubt triple where the base runner has an opportunity to aggressively round third and think about going home.  We saw that from Mauricio yesterday.

With everything he does and the way he plays the game, Mauricio continues to show just what a talented baseball player he is.

Overall, in his 26 game professional career, Mauricio has day-in and day-out found new ways to impress.  So far, he’s had a 20 game hitting streak, and he’s reached base in 25 of his 26 games.  Incredibly, he has followed the two games he has not gotten a hit with multi-hit games which included an extra base hit.  Seeing him perform this way, it is easy to forget he’s just 17 years old, is 2.8 years youger than league average, and this is his first experience playing professional baseball.
