Brooklyn 9, State College 2

Brooklyn tied its season high mark in runs scored, beating the State College Spikes 9-2. L.J. Mazzilli led the charge tonight going 4-for-5, with two runs scored and two RBI.

State College took the lead in the top of the third inning in one of the more bizarre plays you will eve see. Steven Ramos laid a bunt down the first base line and Carlos Valdez went to throw to first but Ramos was called safe. Alex Sanchez thought Ramos was out and instinctively went to throw the ball around the infield but his throw went into left field so Ramos went to try for second and Jonathan Clark fielded the ball quickly but overthrew L.J. Mazzilli who was covering second. The ball was headed straight to the Cyclones dugout, so Ramos sprang to his feet and started towards third before noticing that nobody was covering home so he rounded third and headed for the plate. Eddie Rohan finally came up with the ball after it caromed off the front of the dugout and he then raced home, but Ramos’ hand just beat him, giving the Spikes a 1-0 lead. The Spikes run was a result of a bunt single that then turned into two Cyclones errors.

Brooklyn’s bats came to life in the bottom of the second putting up four runs, thanks to three hits and two errors. Rohan led the inning off with a double and was brought home on a double by Anthony ChavezPatrick Biondi up to bat, Spikes pitcher Jimmy Reed threw a pitch to the backstop advancing Chavez to third. Biondi would reach on a walk and Gavin Cecchini then came up and grounded into a fielders choice, scoringChavez and advancing Biondi to second for the first out. Mazzilli then came up and singled to right and right fielder Luis Perez allowed the ball to get behind him, scoringBiondi and allowing Mazzilli to go to second. Sanchez then singled Mazzilli to third bringing up James Roche who reached on a fielding error by shortstop Cesar Valera, extending Brooklyn’s lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Brooklyn added a run to increase the lead to 5-1. With one out, Rohan hit his second double of the game and moved to third on a groundout by ChavezBiondi then reached on a bunt, scoring Rohan and giving the Cyclones a four run cushion. Brooklyn added another run in the bottom of the fifth to add to their lead and make it 6-1.

State College scored a run in the top of the seventh inning off of David Wynn to make the score 6-2. Mason Katz led things off with a double before moving to third on a single by Luke Voit, and scoring on a sacrifice fly to left field.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Brooklyn added three runs to make it a 9-2 ballgame. With two outs, Cecchini doubled down the right field line, before scoring on a single by Mazzilli to right. Sanchez then came up and hit a booming home run over the roller coaster on top of the scoreboard in left field.
