Baseball America has named Mets prospect Merandy Gonzalez as one of the four starting pitchers on their April “Prospect Team of the Month.”  Given Gonzalez’s start to the season, the honors were well deserved.

In Gonzalez’s four starts for the Columbia Fireflies, he was a perfect 4-0 due in large part to the fact he didn’t allow a run during the entire month.  For a pitcher that had some issues with command, his allowing just three walks in his 28.1 innings pitched was certainly encouraging.  His 23:3 strikeout-walk ratio was more than encouraging.  These aggregate of these stats equate to Gonzalez putting together a 200 ERA+ in the month of April.

Gonzalez’s hot start builds upon the terrific year Gonzalez had for the Cyclones last season. His fastball-curveball combination have been proven to be good enough to get batters out. If he continues to learn how to harness them, this will not be the last such award Gonzalez will earn.
