The New York Mets baseball organization announced on Tuesday afternoon that it will drop its affiliation with the Columbia Fireflies, New York’s Single-A affiliate since 2016. This comes during a realignment in MiLB that has already affected the Kingsport Mets, the former Rookie League affiliate for the Mets.

As a result of this, the Mets’ Double-A affiliate, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, will remain in the Mets minor league system despite being in danger of losing its affiliation last year. Syracuse, Brooklyn and St. Lucie will also retain their Mets affiliations.

This ends a relationship between the Mets and Fireflies organizations that goes back to 2007 when the Fireflies were located in Savannah, then known as the Sand Gnats.

This also ends a link between the Mets and the Columbia-area that dates back to 1990 with the Columbia Mets, who rebranded as the Capital City Bombers in 1993 and stayed in South Carolina’s state capital until 2004. The Sand Gnats’ relocation to Columbia in 2016 ended a 12-year hiatus between the Mets and the Columbia-area.

“The Fireflies would like to thank the New York Mets for more than a dozen years of affiliation between Savannah and Columbia,” the Columbia Fireflies released in a statement.

Since the affiliation began, Columbia and Savannah have seen great success in the South Atlantic League with five playoff appearances and a 2013 SAL Championship title. The two cities have also seen some of the Mets’ top players through the years, including two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz, Dominic Smith and Andrés Giménez.

Columbia will continue to be involved in the Minor League Baseball landscape as it will announce its new MLB affiliate in the coming weeks.
