Betsy Helfand of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that New York Mets right-handed pitcher Andrew Church has retired.

Church, 23, was the Mets 2013 second round draft pick from Basic High School in Henderson, Nevada. He would make the final two appearances of his professional career in his home state of Nevada for the Las Vegas 51s. His last career win came in his penultimate appearance.

Church’s best season was 2016 when he was 7-4 with a 2.92 ERA for Columbia, St. Lucie, and Las Vegas. Unfortunately, Church was not able to replicate that success in future seasons.

Even with Church being unable to replicate this career year, his retirement comes as a surprise. At the moment, there has been no explanation given for his decision.

With his retirement, Church finishes this season 2-6 with a 6.35 ERA in eight starts and one relief appearance.
