As reported Monday by Adam Rubin on ESPN.com, the Mets added another player in less than a week, by signing relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.

After the team signed 1B Matt Clark last week to a minor league deal, they strike again by bringing in a veteran relief pitcher who has experience playing in NY as he did with the Yankees from 2006-2008. The Mets continue to add players, which perplexes me a bit, especially since they have a few of their own from within the organization waiting for their shot, but maybe the Mets are looking for that one player that will be the steal of the winter. There could be another Marlon Byrd out there, but by bringing in extra players, it could also delay the promotion of some key prospects.  Either way, if the Mets can put together the right mix of players without spending a lot of money, then the moves may just be worth it.

Farnsworth, who will turn 37 on April 14, is entering his 16th season in the majors.  He has played with seven different organizations and looks for an opportunity to make his eighth club this spring. In 2013, Farnsworth started out with the Tampa Rays and then was released last August and finished the year with the Pittsburgh Pirates and combined he was 3-1, with a 4.70 ERA in 48 relief appearances.

If Farnsworth makes the Mets bullpen, he could bring to the team veteran leadership the way LaTroy Hawkins did last season and if he matches the numbers that Hawkins put up in 2013, the Mets may have just made another steal two winters in a row. Sometimes the small transactions, can make the biggest difference.
