As of 9:00am EST today, here are today’s Mets minor league starting pitchers:
Las Vegas 51s @ Reno Aces, 9:05pm EST
Chris Schwinden (4-8, 5.70 ERA) vs Brandon McCarthy (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
There has been talk about the Mets needing some extra starters down the line and Chris Schwinden was the first name on the list. Schwinden has bounced around within many organizations and ended up right back with the Mets where he serves as pitching depth in Triple-A, but Las Vegas has not been kind to him at all, as he owns a 5.70 ERA in the PCL. A larger story at hand here might be his opponent, Brandon McCarthy, who is trying to work his way back from a tough injury.
Binghamton Mets @ New Britain Rock Cats, 6:35pm EST
Erik Goeddel (8-3, 3.94 ERA) vs Pat Dean (5-9, 4.61 ERA)
Goeddel looks to build on Mejia’s solid outing from last night as he owns a hot streak of his own at the moment. According to John Bernhardt, following four straight winless starts, Goeddel has been flying since May, chalking up a 5-0 win/loss mark before the halfway point of the season. Over that span, Goeddel had a 3.46 ERA, held opponents to a .216 batting averaged and fanned 8.2 batters per nine innings thrown.
St. Lucie Mets @ Daytona Cubs, 6:05 ET
Michael Fulmer (0-1, 4.50 ERA) vs Ben Wells (6-6, 3.32 ERA)
My boy Michael Fulmer takes the mound for the St. Lucie Mets today and I can’t wait to see how he does. Fulmer is openly one of my favorite prospects in our system, falling just behind Gabriel Ynoa for me, as pitchers I really want to see succeed. Fulmer only went three innings in his last outing, where he allowed a solo home run, and that was a rain shortened affair. Hopefully, Fulmer will get a chance to showcase the stuff that led him to a 2.73 ERA in the SAL last year.
Savannah Sand Gnats @ DelMarva Shorebirds, 5:05pm EST
Steven Matz (3-4, 2.25 ERA) vs TBD
The flame-throwing southpaw will take the mound for Savannah today and has been on quite the hot streak — no pun intended. Matz has gone at least five innings in each of his last five starts and allowed no more than two runs in each of them. In fact, he only allowed two runs once, and it was an eight-inning performance on top of that. Basically, Matz has been on his game lately and the results are right there for anyone to see. Over his last ten games, he has 58 strikeouts in 54.2 innings and has held opponents to a .200 average.
Brooklyn Cyclones @ Batavia Muckdogs, 7:00pm EST
TBD v TBD
Kingsport Mets @ Princeton Rays, 2:05pm EST
Chris Flexen (2-1, 2.57 ERA) vs Jorge Rodriguez (0-3, 4.76 ERA)
Flexen has great stuff and is definitely a name to watch going ahead. That being said, he is coming off two strong starts for the K-Mets and is trying to build some momentum going ahead for a late season promotion. Flexen’s last start resulted in seven innings of shutout ball with nine strikeouts, as he was completely in control.
How is Flexen to old for the App League. He only turned 19 three weeks ago? That puts him on pace to start next year in Brooklyn or challenge him in Savannah.
I made a mathematical error when calculating his age in my head… That one is totally my fault. Sorry!
You’re right.
