Las Vegas 51s @ Fresno Grizzlies, 10:05 pm EST
Carlos Torres (4-3 5.03 ERA) vs. Mike Kickham (3-4, 4.33 ERA)
The past two starts made by Torres have by far been his best of 2013. He’s won both appearances, throwing 13.2 innings and allowing three runs (two earned), 10 hits, one walk, and 17 strikeouts. After a very tough start to the year, Torres is on a three-start winning streak, and has lasted at least six innings in his last four appearances. The turning point of his season was his start against Round Rock on May 8th. Since allowing 10 hits and nine runs in only four innings pitched, he’s been a different pitcher.
Trenton Thunder @ Binghamton Mets, 6:35pm EST
Zach Nuding (2-6, 3.28 ERA) vs. Erik Goeddel (4-2, 4.99 ERA)
Goeddel takes the mound with the hopes of staying unbeaten since he was on the short-end of an April 19th decision against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Most recently, he took a no decision against Altoona; he threw six innings and allowed three runs on three hits, three walks, and six strikeouts. Goeddel is simply allowing too many runners to reach base this season. In 52.1 innings pitched, he’s given up 54 base hits and 23 walks. The righty has walked at least three hitters in five of his last six starts.
Lakeland Flying Tigers @ St. Lucie Mets, 6:35pm EST
Jeff Ferrell (1-4, 4.35 ERA) vs. Noah Syndergaard (2-2, 2.73 ERA)
Syndergaard looks to get back into the win column for the first time since beating Pembroke on May 9th. He only lasted 2.1 innings in his last start against Jupiter, but that’s because Mother Nature wasn’t cooperating last week for the Florida State League. He was perfect during that outing, striking out two. Since April 23rd, the right-hander has pitched into the sixth inning six times in his last seven starts.
The Sand Gnats have tonight off. They welcome the Lexington Legends to Historic Grayson Stadium at 7:05pm tomorrow night.
Off Topic: I have a question for Mets Minors.
I was wondering with the talk of Wheeler possibly being called up soon do any of you think the Mets would also add to the 40-man and call up the lefty hitting Juan Centeno to catch his MLB debut?
He has caught Wheeler the most so far this season and coincidentally it has also resulted in Wheeler’s best outings this season as well. He also has hit well at his position so far this season and may be a better alternative than Recker as a lefty righty catching tandem for the Mets.
Last season the Mets had Rob Johnson come up to catch Harvey though Buck I would say is a better choice this time around as a catching option than Thole was last season.
That’s a good point. I wonder if they would do something like that, but it would be tough fitting him on the 40-man. At this rate though, they could DFA Recker to make room for him and just keep up there until whenever d’Arnaud is ready.
