Carlos Torres (5-3, 4.31 ERA) vs. Brandon Maurer (0-0, 1.35 ERA)

PCL League Scoreboard

Torres was brilliant against Fresno on June 3rd, throwing a complete game shutout. He allowed three hits, no walks, and a season-high 11 strikeouts in the effort. After a tough start to 2013, Torres has begun to figure things out, especially in his last three starts. During that time, he’s thrown 22.2 innings and allowed only three runs (two earned) on 13 hits, one walk, and 28 strikeouts. He takes the mound this afternoon with hopes of extending his personal win streak to five straight starts, and will be pitching during the day for the second time in 12 starts this season.

Jacob deGrom (2-5, 5.09 ERA) vs. Jameson Taillon (3-5, 3.11 ERA)

EAS League Scoreboard

deGrom earned the win against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on June 2nd. The right-hander went 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, three walks, and six strikeouts. He has been struggling with his control lately; in 16 innings pitched over his last three starts, deGrom has walked seven batters, while also giving up 21 base hits. He’ll be trying to turn his luck around away from NYSEG Park, but that’s been hard so far this season. He currently owns a 1-3 record with a 6.86 ERA in 21 innings pitched (four starts) on the road, with the opposition hitting .333 off him.

Angel Cuan (5-1, 3.89 ERA) vs. Andrew Heaney (0-0, 1.46 ERA)

FSL League Scoreboard

Following two straight seven inning shutout performances, Cuan came back down to earth on June 2nd against Charlotte. The southpaw got the no decision after throwing five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. Since not striking anyone out on May 10th against Pembroke, he’s struck out 21 hitters in his last 19 innings pitched. He struggled to a 6.88 ERA in April (despite his 3-1 record), but had a great May to get his season back on track (2-0, 1.23 ERA). Cuan will look to extend his personal unbeaten streak to seven starts.

Yesterday’s ballgame had to be suspended in the seventh inning, and will be resumed today as well.

Luis Cessa (3-2, 3.69 ERA) vs. Patrick Scoggin (5-3, 4.11 ERA)

SAL League Scoreboard

Cessa takes the mound for the first time since earning SAL Pitcher of the Week honors for his dominant performance on June 1st against Kannapolis. The righty shutout the Intimidators for 7.2 innings and allowed only two hits, no walks, and 10 strikeouts. He will try to improve on his 4.71 road ERA in 2013, and is being especially tough on left-handed hitters this season, holding opponents to a .161 batting average.
