We will be releasing the players we’ve chosen as part of a group voting for the Mets roster of the best 25 minor leaguers this season. These players are chosen strictly on their numbers and not on their prospect rankings. It’s going to be a four part series with the position players already posted and the starting rotation with the bullpen still to come. Here is who we have chosen for the bench in our All-Star team:
SS/2B: Gavin Cecchini (Las Vegas 51s/Mets) – The former Mets first round pick had his second straight season were he hit above .300 and finished third in the PCL in hitting. He hit .325/.390/.448 in his first season in Triple-A with eight homeruns, two triples, 27 doubles as he drove in 55 for the 51s. Cecchini showed his skills to make contact as he struck out just 55 times in 446 at-bats. The Mets will let Cecchini play second base in he AFL to see if he can learn that position to play it good enough in the majors.
SS/2B: Andres Gimenez (DSL Mets1 & 2) – The 18-year old Gimenez was outstanding in his first pro season with the Mets. Gimenez showed the ability to hit for a high average and power in the Dominican Summer League. His short swing and mature approach helped him to hit .350/.469/.523 to go with 27 extra base hits. He walked 46 times compared to only 22 strikeouts on the season. Gimenez has the talent to stay at short but also played some second this season.
C/1B: Patrick Mazeika (Columbia Fireflies) – Mazeika was one of the bright spots in the inaugural season for the Columbia Fireflies as he hit .305/.414/.402 in 70 games. Mazeika showed his ability to make consistent contact as he struck out just 39 times while walking 38. Mazeika turned it on in the second half hitting .342/.465/.456 to end his season with an impressive stat line.
2B/3B/SS: Phillip Evans (Binghamton Mets/St. Lucie Mets) – The Eastern League batting champ hit .335/.374/.485 with eight home runs, 30 doubles and drove in 39 runs. Evans started the season with the St. Lucie Mets and hit just .143/.273/.143 in nine games. His performance in the Eastern League was impressive as he won the Eastern League batting title with a 4 for 6 final game.
OF: Raul Beracierta (DSL Mets1 & 2) – The 17-year old outfielder played every outfield position in his first pro season. Not only did he play a very solid outfield he also had a good season with the bat. Beracierta hit .327/.397/.403 combined between the DSL Mets1 & 2. He hit his first pro home run on the 11th of July. To go with his home run he also hit three triples and seven doubles while driving in 23 runs. A solid season all around for the young outfielder.
I like these picks a lot. Great work
Thanks appreciate the words
Interesting that Patrick Mazeika did not make the top 50 list..
Raul Beracierta is a guy who seems pretty interesting based on both age and performance. I couldn’t find any scouting reports or video of him. Does anyone know anything about him? I see he just won the Sterling Award for the DSL Mets 1, so I guess they think highly of him.
Right around there, questions about power and ability to stay behind the plate.
Evans came a long way. This next season will be his biggest one to show his place on the depth charts.

Never had those issues his Rookie year 2015 in Kingsport. Always consistent and dependable. Jose(your Fireflies was pretty much the entire 2015 Kingsport Mets team, staff included moved to Columbia) always moved/rotated him around here too, 1st/C and used him as a DH quite often as well.
The issues were there to anyone who paid attention. He was a college kid hitting rookie league pitching.
Not sure what “issues” you are referring to. Of course he was. He was a Rookie! He was also hitting some of the best pitching in the “Advanced Rookie A” league. Most where rookie pitchers themselves and some had already been in the system a year or two already also. Like anyone else, he has to learn and from what I am seeing, it appears he is doing that and doing it well.
In the Appy League, he hit those pitchers like a veteran his rookie year, so much so that many coaches chose to walk him when they faced him especially in crucial situations instead of letting him swing the bat. In the instances where he did, he came out on top. Ask the Johnson City Cardinals and Greeneville Asttros staff about that.
Now keep in mind I never was privileged this season of getting to see a Fireflies game like I had planed, but I saw plenty of K-Mets games, so I saw last years Mazeika in comparison to your this years Mazeika. But like any other player, give him a chance…. it was only his second season.
Is he interesting due to his age, seems like a light hitter? I didn’t find much on him either.
Mostly age, him playing CF, and looking and the stat line. Really can’t judge power from a 17 year old, that comes later. Has pretty good plate discipline numbers for his age and won a Sterling Award, so I think there’s enough there to have interest. I would like a scouting report though
All I know was that he was a guy that the Mets pursued and he has a bit of dormant power that he needs to develop.
He was 22 and an advanced hitter in a league filled with 19 year olds and D2/3 College players. It wasn’t exactly a fantastic showing.
As a college guy who hit like he did, it was actually natural, but his profile doesn’t fit as a tall catcher and his defense isn’t great.
He was also hurt most of the year.
There should be plenty of room for Mazeika in st lucie at catcher or 1B so im ready to lay my eyes on him next year.
I can only guess you are referring to this year of play because his rookie year was not against a league filled with 19 year olds nor was he hurt most of the year. He had a very exceptional season his first year and played against a league with players in their early 20’s. Some players do get off to a slow start on occasion. Happens to the best of them. He is young and he is a great kid and a player. Give him a chance and see what happens.
Where did you think his defense was lacking?
Pretty much overall in blocking, Framing, Arm. Michael has watched him more than I but we’ve still come back less than enthused, both of us.
I get he’s a good kid, hard worker, etc and appreciate that but he was definitely old for the league. He was older than most of the players on average, and was already more advanced than most. He took advantage of a lesser, younger league.
