One month into the season, we are already seeing some outstanding performances from the Mets minor leaguers. Among these outstanding players, there are a few that stand above the rest:

Position Player of the Month – Amed Rosario

The top prospect in the Mets farm system, if not in all of baseball, has shown exactly why. In the month of April, Rosario hit .404/.439/.506 with four doubles, a triple, homer, and 12 RBI with seven stolen bases. Rosario got a hit in 20 out of 23 games, and he reached base in 22 out of those 23 games. In addition to this outstanding hitting, Rosario has continued playing his typical outstanding shortstop. He also got some exposure to third base, which will also fuel the calls for him to get called up to the majors.

Honorable mention goes to Patrick Mazeika who is absolutely raking for the St. Lucie Mets. In 19 games, the left-handed hitting catcher hit .338/.405/.559 with six doubles, three homers, and 17 RBI.

Defensive Player of the Month – Luis Guillorme

After watching him catch Adeiny Hechavarria‘s bat in Spring Training, this should come as little surprise. No, that wasn’t the reason why he was named the defensive player of the month, but rather it showcased what makes him a great defender. He is fearless out there with good reflexes and even better hands. He’s split time between second and short this year. As good as he’s been at short, he’s been even better at second base.

Honorable mention goes to Gavin Cecchini who has made the transition to second base with a aplomb. He has yet to have the throwing errors that plagued him in his minor league career show up during his time at second and short.

Starting Pitcher of the Month – Merandy Gonzalez

No one in the Mets minor league system has been as dominant as Gonzalez. In his four April starts, Gonzalez was 4-0, and he did not permit one run. For a pitcher whose main issue entering the season was his control, the most encouraging sign was his only walking three runners in his 28.1 innings pitched, fueling his low 0.75 WHIP. In three of his four starts, he pitched at least seven innings, and he has struck out 23 batters.

Honorably mention goes to Jordan Humphreys who has been a strikeout machine. In his five April starts, he was 5-0 with a 1.71 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, and an 11. 4 K/9.

Reliever of the Month – Alberto Baldonado

The left-handed Baldonado has been a shut down reliever this season. In his seven April appearances, he has not allowed a run.  More than that, he has allowed just five hits. In seven of his appearances, Baldonado has pitched more than one inning five times.  Overall, he has been just dominant with a .135 batting average against and an 11.6 K/9.

Honorable mention goes to Kevin McGowan who made nine appearances in April going 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and a 9.0 K/9. Like all of these players, McGowan has certainly raised his profile. If he keeps this up, he will eventually force his way up to the majors. The same goes for Rosario and the rest of these players.
