Co-Position Player of the Month – Peter Alonso, 1B
Level: Las Vegas
Season Stats: .285/.395/.579, 31 2B, 3B, 36 HR, 119 RBI
August Stats: .308/.392/.731, 11 2B, 11 HR, 27 RBI
Alonso finished this season leading the minors in homers partially because of his 11 homers this month. Those 11 homers were the most he has hit in any month since he was drafted by the Mets. During the month, Alonso reached safely in 25 of the 27 games he played. Remarkably, he had two four hit games. Alonso would finish the month on an absolute tear. In the five game hitting streak to end the month, he hit three doubles and three homers. Overall, this was a remarkable finish to an incredible breakout season for a prospect who worked his way up Top 100 prospect lists.
Co-Position Player of the Month – Matt Winaker, OF
Season Stats: .254/.370/.433, 23 2B, 7 3B, 13 HR, 61 RBI, 4 SB
August Stats: .319/.418/.638, 9 2B, 7 HR, 22 RBI
Since being drafted, Winaker has shown an ability to get on base, but until recently, he has not shown the power he displayed late in his collegiate career. That changed this past month with Winaker slugging .638 in August. During this month, he hit more homers than he had hit between the date he was drafted until the end of July. With this power surge, Winaker entered the top 10 in OPS in the South Atlantic League. With the way he has finished the season, Winaker has significantly raised his profile in the Mets organization.
Starting Pitcher of the Month – David Peterson, LHP
Level: St. Lucie
Season Stats: 7-10, 3.16 ERA, 1.172 WHIP, 8.1 K/9
August Stats: 3-1, 2.93 ERA, 1.120 WHIP, 9.1 K/9
After dealing with a dead arm and struggling when first called up to St. Lucie, Peterson has gotten back to being the pitcher he was earlier this season with Columbia. Peterson finished the month and his season winning his final four starts. In each of those dominant starts, he allowed no earned runs while allowing just two hits. He also finished the season with four quality starts over his final five starts. That was a promising and important finish for last year’s first round draft pick.
Honorable Mention: Since joining the Mets organization Frankyln Kilome had a 3.75 K/BB ratio which was his best of the season. The 30 strikeouts he had in August was also the highest total he posted in any month this season.
Reliever of the Month – Matt Pobereyko, RHP
Level: St. Lucie & Binghamton
Season Stats: 3-3, 3.34 ERA, 10 SV, 1.147 WHIP, 9.7 K/9
August Stats: 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 SV, 0.250 WHIP, 7.5 K/9
Opposing batters were 0-for-36 with just three walks against Pobereyko in August. This fueled a seven appearance scoreless streak with St. Lucie which carried forward to Binghamton, where he had an additional five scoreless appearances. What makes this stretch all the more remarkable was his pitching almost exclusively in higher stress innings. Nine of his 10 August appearances were in the seventh inning or later with six of those being in the eighth inning or later.
Honorable Mention: Conner O’Neil had a 1.86 ERA over 14.1 innings pitched while posting a season best 4.00 K/BB ratio.
