Mets Minors Recap: Amed Rosario, Dominic Smith Both Triple

Las Vegas  (4-4) 7, Fresno 5 F/11

The 51s went into the 9th inning with a 5-1 lead and the lefty fireballer Josh Smoker on the mound. After a walk, four singles and a throwing error by Gavin Cecchini at the score was 5-3 and closer Paul Sewald was summoned in to stop the bleeding. He struck out the power hitting A.J. Reed for the second out before Matt Duffy came up with a clutch two-out single to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

Las Vegas went to on to score two runs in the top of the 11th on a run producing walk by Rene Rivera and a RBI single from Ty Kelly. Jeff Walters pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning with two strikeouts to pick up his first save of the year.

Despite scoring seven runs and walking 14 times the Las Vegas offense struggled with men on, going just 2 for 16 with runners in scoring position stranding 15 runners. Dilson Herrera made his season debut at second base and went 2 for 5 with a walk, double, two runs scored, two stolen bases and his second double of the year.

Roger Bernadina led the 51s offense out of the four hole going 2 for 3 with three walks, three runs scored and stole two bases. Center fielder Brandon Nimmo led off and was 2 for 7 but the normally patient left-handed hitter hasn’t walked since the first game of the season.

Marc Krauss (0 for 3, 3 BB, R), Kelly (1 for 4, 2 BB, RBI) and Rene Rivera (1 for 4, 2 BB, 2 RBI) all reached base three times in the win. Cecchini was 0 for 4 with two walks and is now hitting .231 with a .375 OBP in 26 at bats. Box Score

Erie 9, Binghamton (4-3) 5

The B-Mets pitching staff blew early leads of 3-1 and 5-3 while the offense went cold for the final four innings of the loss. Starter Tyler Pill lasted only 4.2 innings before allowing five earned runs. Luis Mateo took the loss after going 2.1 innings and giving up one run on three hits and a walk.

Akeel Morris struggled with his command in the 8th inning walking two batters before giving up a three-run homer, he allowed only two homeruns in 61 innings all of last season in the minors.

Dominic Smith had a big day at the plate going 2 for 4 with a double, three RBI and his first triple of the year on a play that initially looked like an out. The right fielder went back on the ball and it looked like he caught it as he ran into the fence. The umpire ruled that he didn’t catch it somehow and Smith hustled into third for a two-run triple.

Outfielder Maikis De La Cruz went 1 for 4 with a double and run scored as he extended his hitting to six games to start his B-Mets career. He has gone 6 for 18 with four walks, four RBI and four runs scored. Box Score

St. Lucie (7-3) 3, Brevard County 2

Tomas Nido knocked in Amed Rosario with a single in the 5th inning that turned out to be the game-winner as the St. Lucie pitching staff didn’t allow a run in the final seven innings. Nido was 2 for 4 on the day and is currently third in the Florida State League with his .400 average.

Rosario has done exactly what the Mets hoped for when they sent him back to St. Lucie to start the season, yesterday he was 2 for 4 with his first double and second triple of the season. He is now hitting .318 with a .500 slugging and three steals but has yet to walk in ten games.

Leadoff man Champ Stuart got the Mets on the board in the first inning with his first homer of the season. He also walked and didn’t strike out for the second straight game after doing so 12 times in the first eight games. Patrick went 2 for 4 as he continues to play right field with Wuilmer Becerra still nursing an injury.

Starter Ricky Knapp picked up his second win of the season after pitching 5 innings and giving up two runs. Tim Peterson struck out four batters in his two scoreless innings of relief. The right-hander has now pitched five hitless innings this year with ten strikeouts.

Alberto Baldonado struck out the side in a 1-2-3 8th inning and reportedly topped out at 94 MPH with his fastball. Corey Taylor got into trouble in the 9th with runners on the corners and one out but got a strikeout and pop out to end the game. The 2015 7th round pick earned his second save of the season and has not given up a run in 4.1 innings this year. Box Score

Greenville 5, Columbia (5-5) 3

Going into last night’s game the Fireflies pitching staff had given up only four homers in nine games but allowed three solo shots in their 5th loss of the year. Starter Kevin Canelon allowed three runs in five innings and struck out seven. The birthday boy Tyler Bashlor allowed a homerun to the first batter he faced for the first run scored off his all year. The now 23-year old righty did hit 95 MPH on the gun according to the Columbia radio broadcast.

Outfielder Joe Tuschak led off the bottom of the third inning with the first Fireflies homer in Spirit Communications Park history. David Thompson came up in the bottom of the 9th inning having gone o for 3 with his hitting streak on the line. Thompson reached on an infield single that pushed his hitting streak to ten games and scored Vinny Siena giving him a league leading ten RBI. Box Score
