Fresno 5, Las Vegas 1

The Las Vegas 51’s couldn’t complete the minor league sweep Friday night, and also denied starting pitcher Logan Verrett his first Triple-A win, as the Fresno Grizzlies defeat the 51’s 5-1.  Verrett (0-1, 3.97) lasted just 5.1 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits in the loss.  Las Vegas only mustered four hits against Fresno’s Jason Berken and the Grizzlies bullpen shutdown the 51’s offense allowing just one base runner in three innings of work.  Kirk Nieuwenhuis drove in the lone run and has a hit in 6-of-7 games so far this season.  Las Vegas will look to rebound tonight against Fresno with veteran starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-0, 5.40) on the hill. Binghamton 7, New Hampshire 0

Brian Burgamy‘s solo home run in the fourth inning was all the Binghamton Mets needed, as they improve to 6-2 and move into first place by a half game in the Eastern Division, over the Reading Fightin Phils who were rained out Friday night.  Burgamy would add a second home run in the 8th inning with the game pretty much already out of hand thanks to a 4-run seventh.  Rainy Lara (2-0, 2.19) made his second start for the Mets and was superb.  Three hits was the only blemish on Lara’s line as he went seven scoreless while striking out three.  It should also be noted that the Mets’ pitchers faced one over the minimum last night.  Tyler Pill (0-1, 6.75) is the scheduled starter today for Binghamton as these two teams face-off again. St. Lucie 6, Fort Myers 3

Thanks to a tie-breaking three-run eighth inning, the St. Lucie Mets downed the For Myers Miracle 6-3 at Tradition Field.  Steven Matz (0-1, 3.27) started the game for the Mets and got a no-decision in his second start of the season.  Matz went six innings giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits but added six strikeouts.  Bret Mitchell came in and picked up the win in relief throwing two more scoreless innings, bringing his season total to 5.2 in three appearances.  Randy Fontanez would pick up his first save of the season.  Outfielder Brandon Nimmo drove in two of the Mets runs on two hits all while bringing his season average up to .370.  Three more Mets would have multi-hit games.  Michael Fulmer (0-1, 17.18) is the scheduled starter for St. Lucie today. Savannah 4, Rome 1

For the second night in a row, Stefan Sabol would get the Sand Gnats on the board in the first inning.  The difference is last night it stayed in the yard and was a 2-run double, not a 3-run home run like Thursday night.  Savannah’s pitching would make that hold up behind a decent performance by starting pitcher Robert Gsellman.  Gsellman (1-1, 1.46) lasted seven innings allowing just one run on six hits while striking out six.  Darwin Frias and Robert Coles would come in and shut the door for good allowing one hit and no runs over two innings.  Victor Cruzado‘s two-run triple in the third inning would round out the scoring for the Sand Gnats who improve to 5-3.  John Gant (1-0, 1.50) is the scheduled to get the start today for Savannah. Player of the Night

With the exception of the Las Vegas game, it was a good night for the New York Mets minor league teams.  Rainy Lara was exceptional in his start and many others contributed in their respective teams victories, but it is Brian Burgamy who will take the player of the night honors.  Burgamy was 2-for-3 with two home runs, two RBI, and two runs scored.
