LAS VEGAS 10, FRESNO 4

Chris Young, currently on rehab assignment from a quad strain,  had a monster day at the plate for the 51’s going 5 for 5 with two home runs, a double, and two singles.   He drove in five and scored four. That was plenty of support for Rafael Montero who carried a no hitter into the sixth inning. Montero finished the day going 6.1 strong innings, allowing two hits, 2 runs (both earned), while walking two and striking out four. His ERA sits at a 2.60 on the year. (box score)

BINGHAMTON 6, NEW HAMPSHIRE 0

Binghamton starter Hansel Robles had another excellent outing for the B-Mets allowing just four hits over five shutout innings. He walked two and struck out six. Robles is yet to allow a run over his first two starts of 2014. He’s pitched ten scoreless innings thus far, allowing just three walks while striking out fourteen.  Darrell Ceciliani and Wilfredo Tovar had two hits apiece in support of Robles to help Binghamton improve to 7-3 on the year.  (box score)

ST LUCIE 6, FORT MYERS 2

St Lucie completed the series sweep of the Miracle on Sunday afternoon behind a second straight solid outing for starter Domingo Tapia. The right hander tossed five innings of no hit, shut out ball. He struck out two and walked two.   Second baseman Dilson Herrera (the Mets’ 10th ranked prospect according to MiLB.com)  had a nice day at the plate for St Lucie, going 4 for 5 with a double and a run scored. . Left fielder Gilbert Gomez also enjoyed a nice day. Gomez finished 2 for 2 with a home run, two RBI, two walks, and two runs scored. Gomez is hitting .455  early on. He has two home runs in his first eleven at bats.  He had just one home run in 366 at bats last year.  Brandon Nimmo chipped in with a double as well and finished 1 for 5.  St Lucie has now won five straight. They open a series against Jupiter on Monday at Tradition Field. (box score)

SAVANNAH 6, ROME 2

The Sand Gnats finished the series sweep of the Braves on Sunday afternoon in Rome.  Shortstop Gavin Cecchini led the way finishing 2 for 5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. First baseman Dominic Smith went 1 for 5 on the day, recording the only hit against the Brave’s Mike Minor, who is currently on a rehab assignment recovering from a sore shoulder, and got the start for Rome. Savannah starter Chris Flexen was good, going 6.1 innings while allowing two runs on six hits.  He walked one and struck out four. Akeel Morris got the win for Savannah, going 2.2 innings in relief of Flexen.  The Gnats improved to 7-3 on the young season.  (box score)

PLAYER OF THE NIGHT

There were several outstanding performances for the Mets’ affiliates on Sunday so I will give out two awards, one offensive award and one pitching award. On the offensive side,  Chris Young‘s 5 for 5, two home run performance deserves recognition and is hopefully a sign of good things to come for the Mets’ rehabbing outfielder. Young has looked good in his rehab stint and doesn’t seem to be affected by the ailing quad.  Pitching wise, we saw three dominating outings by Rafael Montero, Hansel Robles and Domingo Tapia. But my star of the night goes to Tapia who didn’t allow a hit over five scoreless innings against Ft. Myers, while walking just two. He was lifted after 85 pitches. Tapia has the stuff of any of the Mets’ top pitching prospects. If he can harness his control, good things can be expected of him in the future.
