It was a big day for the New York Mets yesterday; not only did they sweep a doubleheader from the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field, but Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler both got the W’s. For Wheeler, it was a successful MLB debut, going six scoreless innings, allowing four hits, five walks, and seven strikeouts. The five walks are obviously too much, but I attribute that to some nerves. Also, it was great to see how he stepped up with runners on base. Following the game, the Mets made a flurry of roster moves, and here’s a quick summary:

  • Wheeler was considered the 26th man for yesterday’s doubleheader, which is allowed by the league. Since he’s the 26th man, the team can option him back to the minors and bring him up in sooner than 10 days, which is the standard rule. So, the Mets officially optioned Wheeler back to the minors after winning last night, and will promote him again for his start on Tuesday in Chicago against the White Sox.
  • The Mets announced they’ve acquired Eric Young, Jr. He was an outfielder for the Colorado Rockies who was recently designated for assignment. In 174 at-bats in 2012, Young hit .316/.377/.448, but struggled to a .242/.290/.352 in 165 at-bats this season. He will likely be inserted directly into the lineup as the team’s left fielder and leadoff hitter, as he can showcase his speed on the base paths and in the field.
  • In this trade with the Rockies, the Mets sent Collin McHugh to Colorado. McHugh was recently designated for assignment by New York to make room on the 40-man roster for Carlos Torres. McHugh was 3-2 with a 2.87 ERA in nine starts for Triple-A Las Vegas, but struggled to an 0-1 record and 10.29 ERA in three appearances in the majors this season. Collin was a good dude, I’ll miss him, but I’m excited to see what Young can bring to the table.
  • In yesterday’s Prospect Spotlight, I talked about how Jacob deGrom was adjusting to life in Double-A. Little did I know, he was on his way to Tucson to make his Triple-A debut due to the lack of starting pitchers in Wally Backman‘s clubhouse. In 5.2 innings pitched, deGrom one run on eight hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. Also, today is his birthday, so happy birthday, Jacob!
  • Finally, Andrew Brown was promoted from Las Vegas to the majors once again, and the recently promoted Collin Cowgill was designated for assignment. Brown is hitting .346/.432/.660 with the 51s, and is on his way to Atlanta for his second cup of coffee in the bigs this year. Cowgill got off to a good start in the majors this season, but is now hitting .180/.206/.311 in 61 at-bats. Like McHugh, the Mets have 10 days to trade the outfielder before putting him on waivers.

Well, a lot of stuff happened last night, and I think I got it all in one spot here. Here’s to hopefully another win in Atlanta tonight!
