David Lennon of the NY Daily News, writes that the no one will take the Mets seriously until they spend money and sign a free agent.
.. maybe Jeff Wilpon got a bit carried away on Day 3 of the GM meetings when he casually suggested the Mets might get something done by nightfall. To be fair, the team’s chief operating officer didn’t specify what that something could be……. in this overheated environment, with the hair-trigger hysteria surrounding the Mets as they look to improve this offseason, we’re all getting jumpy.
If the sports writers are getting jumpy, imagine how the Mets fans must feel. It’s like getting all excited about going to your first baseball game, only to find out the tickets were never purchased, yes, that may have happened to me once before and I was not a happy kid at the time, but when it comes to the Mets promising the fan base that everything will be alright and so far not delivering on anything, the worry starts to build up.
Would it be a major disappointment if the Mets walked away after the GM meetings and didn’t make a splash? More than likely, Yes. Something needs to give, and if the Mets want their fan base to take them seriously, then they need to seal the deal and land a player, like Curtis Granderson or even Jhonny Peralta, before the meetings end. They can’t walk away empty handed.
Lennon states that, outside, people are getting anxious about their team and to that notion Sandy Alderson responds:
“Do I sense it? Yeah, to some extent,” he continues, “Do I tune it out? Yes, to the largest extent possible. Because for us this is a day-to-day proposition and it’s not that predictable, so I sort of have to take it out of the equation. I sense it, but work through it.”
The only option at this point is to get a deal done, and yes we all understand that the fans can’t dictate what the Mets do with their money, but on the flip side of that, the fans not showing up to games, will dictate how the Mets earn their money. So at the end of the day, the fans are the ones that need to be pleased. Hopefully the organization will make a move that pleases everyone.
They did. Didn’t you hear, Huey Lewis is coming to Citi Field. They couldn’t afford for him the bring the News with him…
¨Because for us this is a day-to-day proposition and it’s not that predictable, so I sort of have to take it out of the equation. I sense it, but work through it.”
Assuming that ¨this¨ refers to the fans´ discontent, then Sandy´s misreading/ underestimating the discontent. The decline in attendance is far from a day-to-day thing– it´s been falling for 4 years. If he´s discounting anything that´s not that predictable, then he´s making a serious mistake. Being unpredictable doesn´t mean something´s not important.
Here´s a message: Improve the team in a significant way now, or people will stop caring at all and it will take you years to win back their trust and interest.
freakin’ Coupons…AARGH!!
