The New York Mets have made some more roster moves on Tuesday, as the team announced that they have optioned both Sam McWilliams and Khalil Lee to the Triple-A roster.

For Lee this move is not a surprising one, considering the fact that he has yet to make his MLB debut and the Mets have plenty of outfield depth off their bench already with Kevin Pillar and Albert Almora Jr.

Lee was acquired by the Mets as part of the three-team trade that sent Andrew Benintendi to the Kanas City Royal last month. The former third round pick spent the 2019 season with Kansas City’s Double-A affiliate, hitting .264/.363/.372, with 21 doubles and 53 stolen bases across 129 games played.

Lee is currently listed as the Mets No. 7 prospect by MLB.com and will be getting his first taste of Triple-A this season.

Now this is far more interesting when it comes to McWilliams, as there was some real buzz throughout camp that suggested he had a chance to make the Opening Day roster coming out of the bullpen.

The Mets signed McWilliams to a $750,000 major league contract at the end of November, despite the fact that he has yet to make his MLB debut. New York gave him this deal because McWilliams had plenty of other suitors in free agency, but he still had three minor league options even with the major league contract.

McWilliams made his third appearance of the spring today, pitching another scoreless inning against the Houston Astros. All told, the right-hander has pitched three scoreless frames, but has walked five batters to go along with his four strikeouts.

Now that he has been optioned, the 6-foot-7 hurler will focus on continuing his development as he will open the season with the Syracuse Mets.
