The New York Mets have announced they have purchased the contract of RHP Mitch Atkins from the Somerset Patriots. The 31 -year-old Atkins was the Chicago Cubs 2014 seventh round draft pick.  He will be assigned to the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s.

Atkins made 10 appearances in the major leagues between 2009 – 2011.  In those 10 appearances, he has went 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA, 1.897 WHIP, and a 6.8 K/9.  He has last pitched with an affiliated minor league team in 2016.  This season he has made 11 appearances for the Patriots going 4-3 with a 4.06 ERA, 1.145 WHIP, and an 8.6 K/9.

According to Jacob Resnick of MMN, the New York Mets have also purchased the contract of LHP Gunnar Kines from the Schaumburg Boomers. The 23-year-old Kines was the 2015 36th round draft pick of the Miami Marlins.  He is slated to start for the Brooklyn Cyclones on Saturday, June 24th.

Kines lasted just one year in the Marlins organization going 3-3 with a 1.77 ERA, 1.093 WHIP, and a 7.6 K/9 in 16 games. Despite his success, the Marlins parted ways with the tall left-handed pitcher. He is a fastball/change-up pitcher who can get his fastball into the mid 90s.  He has used this repertoire to dominate the Frontier League for the past two seasons.  This year he is 5-1 with a 1.31 ERA, 1.040 WHIP, and a 11.5 K/9
