The Mets made a small flurry of internal transactions Thursday afternoon, as LHP Alberto Baldonado was promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas from Double-A Binghamton, RHPs Cory Burns and Tim Peterson were demoted to Binghamton from Las Vegas, and IF Dale Burdick was demoted to High-A St. Lucie from Binghamton, according to a team release.

Additionally, the Mets have signed SS Gustavo Nunez to a minor league contract, and have assigned him to Binghamton.

Nunez, 29, had been playing in the Detroit Tigers organization until his release on April 27. Originally signed by Detroit in 2007, the native of the Dominican Republic is a career .267 hitter, with 260 runs batted in and 161 stolen bases in 829 minor league games.

Selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2011 Rule 5 draft, Nunez spent the 2012 season on the disabled list and was returned to the Tigers prior to the 2013 season. He will likely see sufficient playing time at both middle infield positions for the Rumble Ponies.

Baldonado had been one of the few bright spots for Binghamton through the first six weeks of the season. The 24-year-old southpaw has yet to allow an earned run in 11 appearances, and has struck out 25 batters — as opposed to five walks — in 16.2 innings. His strikeout rate of 41% is tops in the Mets’ organization.

Baldonado, one of the few holdovers in the minor league system from the Omar Minaya regime, features a fastball that tops out at 94 mph, with a wipe-out curveball that sits in the high 70s. Given the recent injury to Mets closer Jeurys Familia and the struggles of Josh Smoker, a major league appearance this season by Baldonado is not out of the question.

Burns has a 6.00 ERA in 11 games between Las Vegas and Binghamton this season, while Peterson has yet to allow a run in 12.2 innings.

Burdick, a former 40th round draft selection has hit four home runs and driven in nine runs between Binghamton and St. Lucie, spanning 21 games.
