According to Matt Eddy from Baseball America the Mets have signed Niuman Romero to a minor league deal. The infielder spent the entire 2015 season at AAA Nashville Sounds in the Oakland A’s farm system. He hit .278/.363/.325 while playing third base, shortstop, and right field.
This will be the second in the Mets organization for Niuman who played in 32 games for the Binghamton Mets in 2011.
He is 2 for 18 in his Major League career, making appearances with the 2010 Boston Red Sox and the 2009 Clevelan Indians. Romero is a career .269/.352/.348 hitter in the minors with 18 homeruns and 101 stolen bases in 3893 at bats.
He has experience at every infield position with the most coming at shortstop (624 games) and the second most at third base (220). Niuman has also played 16 games in right field and pitched 3.2 innings during his long minor league career. The switch-hitting Venezuelan will turn 31 on January 24th.
The Washington Nationals have signed left-handed pitcher Darin Gorski to a minor league deal according to Baseball America. He pitched the entire 2015 season with the AAA Las Vegas 51’s in the Mets system. The 28-year old was 10-8 with a 5.52 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in 28 games (27 starts) over 137 innings.
The Mets drafted Darin in 2009 in the 7th round out of Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. Overall, in his seven minor league seasons he has gone 52-38 with a 3.82 ERA and 1.290 ERA. He was the Florida State League Starting Pitcher of the Year in 2011.
Organization filler or preclude to a pending move…
Filler, Vegas roster finally starting to round out. Infield is pretty crowded.
Infield looking very crowded, which is why I am wondering if someone could be on the way out.
Hopefully going to Bingo to replace JRod.
If he bumps someone from Vegas, I know what they’ll say. “Niuman!”
Six one, hundred ninety and zero power…meh
Org filler.
Couldn’t understand why Gorski wasn’t even given a look as a LOOGY. Always had good numbers against lefties and at 6’7″, he had to be a handful for an at at or two.
Never succeeded at the AAA level, he was on the Mets 40-man roster at one point though. He is 6’4, not sure where you are getting the 6’7 from.
It is definitely crowded at Vegas after looking at the depth charts. They do love having a couple of veterans at AA too though.
Would make some sense, they like to have a vet or two at AA. Tough to replace JRod who was great for Bingo.
