On Monday, the Mets officially signed their second round draft pick from the 2020 MLB Draft, J.T. Ginn, a right-handed pitcher out of Mississippi State University.

Ginn was the no. 52 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. He was signed for $2.9 million (the value of the no. 52 overall pick was $1,403,200). The signing bonus is equal to the value of the no. 23 overall draft pick.

Ginn, originally slated to be picked in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft, fell to the second round after having Tommy John Surgery in March. Joe DeMayo of SNY , in a twitter post calls Ginn a no. 2 type starter with three main pitches. According to a twitter post by MLB.com’s Jim Callis, those pitches include a fastball that has topped at 97 miles per hour, a nasty sinker that is known for generating ground balls and many swings and misses, as well as an aggressive slider.

In 2019, Ginn had a 3.22 ERA with 109 strikeouts, allowing just 35 runs over the course of 86.1 innings pitched. He started Mississippi State’s home opener on February 14th before having Tommy John surgery in March. In his opening night appearance in 2020 he recorded four strikeouts over three innings pitched.

MMNs’ Doug M. took an in-depth look at Ginn in an article earlier this month.

As long as he can stay healthy coming off of the surgery, Ginn will be an exciting prospect to watch as his pitching evolves at the professional level.
